Coolant Expansion Tank Cap - pressure cap for the cooling system expansion tank, rated at 15 psi.

The cap seals the expansion tank and regulates system pressure: it holds the circuit at its working pressure to raise the coolant boiling point, venting through an integral relief valve once 15 psi is exceeded. As the engine cools, the vacuum valve allows coolant to be drawn back into the circuit, maintaining the correct system level.

Frequently asked questions

What does the NTC7161 coolant expansion tank cap do and what is its pressure rating?
The NTC7161 is a 15 psi pressure cap for the coolant expansion tank. It seals the system and maintains rated pressure to raise the coolant boiling point, and returns overflow coolant back into the tank when the system cools. It fits Defender 1986 to 2006 (2.5L TDi), Discovery 1 (TDi, 2.0L MPi, V8 EFi), and Range Rover Classic (TDi and V8 EFi).
Why does the pressure rating of the coolant cap matter?
Fitting the wrong rated cap can cause premature coolant boiling on a system designed for higher pressure, or overpressure damage to hoses and the expansion tank on a system designed for lower pressure. Always verify the correct pressure rating for your specific model before ordering.
What are the signs that a coolant expansion tank cap needs replacing?
Signs include coolant loss with no visible external leak, steam from the cap area, or a hose that collapses as the engine cools. The internal rubber sealing washer hardens over time, causing the pressure valve to seat incorrectly. Caps are inexpensive and worth replacing during any cooling system work.
