Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC5053 alternator and what does it do?
The RTC5053 is a Lucas A133-type alternator rated at 85A for V8 EFI petrol engines. Driven by the auxiliary belt from the crankshaft, it generates the electrical power that charges the battery and runs the vehicle's electrical systems while the engine is running.
Does this alternator come with a pulley?
No, the RTC5053 is supplied less pulley. You transfer the drive pulley from your original alternator across to the new unit when fitting, so keep the old pulley and its fixings. Check the pulley suits your belt type before fitting.
Which vehicles does the A133 alternator fit?
The RTC5053 fits the Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, from VIN JA610294) with the A133 V8 EFI petrol engine. The Range Rover Classic fitment starts at that VIN, so confirm your chassis number if you have an earlier car.
What are the signs the alternator is failing?
A failing alternator usually shows as a battery warning light on the dash, dimming lights, or a battery that keeps going flat. On the V8 EFI engine a weak charge can also cause rough running as the electrical systems lose voltage. Test the charging output to confirm before replacing.
