Fuel Tank Sender Unit for the fuel level monitoring system.

The sender unit mounts through the top face of the fuel tank and measures fuel level via a float arm connected to a variable resistor. As fuel level changes, the float arm adjusts the resistance signal transmitted to the dashboard fuel gauge.

Frequently asked questions

What does the fuel tank sender unit do?
The fuel tank sender unit mounts through the top of the fuel tank and measures fuel level using a float arm linked to a variable resistor. As the fuel level changes, it varies the resistance signal sent to the dashboard fuel gauge, so the gauge reads the correct level.
Which Defender 90 does this sender unit fit?
This fuel tank sender unit fits the Defender 90 (1983-2006) on petrol and diesel engines, but not EFI or six-cylinder variants, between VIN (V)AA243343 and (V)WA159806. Check your engine type and chassis number, since EFI and 6-cylinder models use a different sender.
What other part numbers does this sender unit cross-reference to?
This fuel tank sender unit cross-references to Land Rover numbers PRC5341 and PRC8709. If your old sender or vehicle records show either code, this STC1139 unit is the equivalent for the Defender 90 fuel level system within the listed VIN range.
What are the signs this fuel tank sender unit has failed?
A failed fuel tank sender unit typically shows as an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge, a gauge stuck on empty or full, or a needle that jumps around. Faults usually come from a worn resistor track or a stuck float arm inside the tank.
Is the fuel tank sender unit a DIY job to fit?
Replacing the fuel tank sender unit usually means accessing the top of the fuel tank, which on the Defender 90 often requires dropping or partly removing the tank. It's a moderate job best done with the tank low on fuel and the battery disconnected, given the fuel system involvement.
