Starter Solenoid - the solenoid for the Lucas M113 starter motor, part of the engine starting system.

Mounted on the starter motor body, the solenoid performs two tasks in sequence. Energised from the starter switch, it first draws the engagement lever across to throw the drive pinion into mesh with the flywheel ring gear, then closes the heavy-duty main contacts that connect the battery directly to the motor field and armature windings.

A solenoid that clicks without cranking, or that cranks only intermittently, normally indicates burnt or pitted main contacts rather than a failed starter motor.

For the Lucas M113 as fitted to the 2.25 and 2.5 litre naturally aspirated diesel engines.

Frequently asked questions

What does the starter solenoid do?
The starter solenoid switches heavy current to the Lucas M113 starter motor and pushes the drive pinion into the flywheel ring gear. When you turn the key it does both jobs in sequence so the engine cranks. It mounts on the starter motor body.
Which engines use this starter solenoid?
This solenoid suits the Lucas M113 starter fitted to the 2.25 diesel and 2.5 naturally aspirated diesel from 1968 to 1986, used on the Land Rover Series 2/3 and early Defender. Confirm your starter is the M113 type before ordering.
What are the signs the starter solenoid has failed?
A failed starter solenoid typically gives a single click with no crank, intermittent starting, or the starter spinning without engaging the flywheel. Corroded internal contacts are the usual cause on these older Lucas M113 units.
