Steering Box is the recirculating-ball power steering gear at the heart of the steering system, converting rotation of the steering column into the side-to-side movement of the drop arm that operates the steering linkage.

It is a hydraulically assisted unit fed by the power steering pump, reducing the effort required at the wheel. This is the lightweight assembly with a four-bolt mounting to the chassis, configured for left-hand drive.

Supplied as the steering box only, without the drop arm.

Frequently asked questions

What does this steering box do and which vehicles is it for?
This steering box is the recirculating-ball power steering gear that turns steering column rotation into the drop arm movement that steers the vehicle. It's the Adwest lightweight, four-bolt, left-hand-drive unit for the Defender 1987-2006 (non-Puma), Land Rover part QAF500120.
How do I confirm this steering box fits my Defender?
This left-hand-drive box fits the Defender from chassis (V)4A675736 onward and is the non-Puma, four-bolt type. Confirm your vehicle is LHD, check for the four-bolt chassis mounting, and use your VIN to verify the (V)4A675736 build break before ordering.
Do I need to reuse my old drop arm with this steering box?
Yes, this box is supplied without a drop arm, so you'll transfer your existing drop arm across or fit a new one separately. The drop arm clamps to the box output shaft. Mark its position first so the steering stays centred when you reassemble.
What are the signs a steering box is worn?
Signs of a worn steering box include steering wander, excessive free play at the wheel, and power steering fluid leaks from the input shaft seal or housing. On Defenders the recirculating-ball mechanism develops play over time. Persistent leaks or notchy steering usually mean the box needs replacing.
