Brand Pierburg
Wastegate Modulator for the turbocharger boost control system.

This electro-pneumatic solenoid valve is controlled by the engine ECU and regulates the pressure signal supplied to the turbocharger wastegate actuator. By modulating that signal it governs how much boost the turbocharger develops, keeping charge pressure within the mapped target across the engine's operating range. A faulty modulator can result in over-boost or under-boost conditions and associated fault codes.

Specified for the Td5 2.5L five-cylinder turbo diesel engine.

Frequently asked questions

What does the wastegate modulator do on the TD5?
The wastegate modulator is an electro-pneumatic solenoid valve controlled by the engine ECU on the TD5 diesel. It regulates the pressure signal to the turbocharger wastegate actuator, governing how much boost the turbo develops. Fitted to Defender (1998-2007) and Discovery 2 (1998-2004).
What are the signs of a faulty wastegate modulator?
A faulty wastegate modulator typically causes over-boost or under-boost on the TD5, often with turbo-related fault codes and reduced performance. The solenoid can stick or fail electrically with age. If boost is erratic or the engine drops into limp mode, the modulator is a common cause worth checking.
Where is the wastegate modulator fitted and is it the original type?
The wastegate modulator sits in the TD5 turbocharger boost-control circuit, plumbed into the pressure line to the wastegate actuator with an electrical connector to the ECU. It's a Pierburg solenoid, matching the original boost-control valve on Defender and Discovery 2.
