Small End Bush (gudgeon pin bush) for the connecting rod small end on Land Rover diesel engines.

The small end bush is a precision bronze bush pressed into the bore at the small end of the connecting rod. It provides the bearing surface for the gudgeon pin, which links the connecting rod to the piston crown. This fully-floating gudgeon pin arrangement allows relative rotation between the pin, rod, and piston to distribute wear evenly across the bearing surfaces. The bush is replaced as a matter of course during piston and connecting rod reconditioning.

Frequently asked questions

What does the small end bush do in the connecting rod?
It's a precision bronze bush pressed into the small end of the connecting rod, providing the bearing surface for the gudgeon pin that links the rod to the piston crown. This fully floating arrangement lets the pin rotate freely, spreading wear evenly across the bearing surface.
Does this small end bush fit the TDI or TD5 diesel engine?
No. It's specified for the 2.5D and 2.5TD diesel engines only, not the later TDI or TD5 units, which use a different connecting rod and bush design. Confirm your exact engine code before ordering.
Can the small end bush be reused, or does it need replacing during an engine rebuild?
It's replaced as a matter of course during piston and connecting rod reconditioning, rather than reused. Since it's a wear item supporting the gudgeon pin, fitting a new bush during a rebuild avoids repeating the job prematurely.
Which Land Rover models use this small end bush?
It's listed for the Defender (1983-2006) with the 2.5D and 2.5TD diesel engines, and the Series II and III diesel models.
