Clutch Master Cylinder sits at the head of the clutch hydraulic release circuit, mounted on the pedal box and operated directly by the clutch pedal.

When the pedal is depressed, the cylinder pressurises hydraulic fluid and delivers it through the clutch line to the slave cylinder, which disengages the clutch to allow gear changes. It is used on manual transmission applications.

A worn master cylinder leaks internally and loses pressure, producing a soft or sinking pedal and incomplete clutch disengagement; this unit is a direct replacement for the original pedal-box-mounted cylinder.

Frequently asked questions

What does the clutch master cylinder do?
The clutch master cylinder sits at the head of the clutch hydraulic circuit on the Discovery 2, mounted on the pedal box and operated by the clutch pedal. Pressing the pedal pressurises fluid that travels to the slave cylinder, which disengages the clutch so you can change gear.
Which Discovery 2 does this clutch master cylinder fit?
This clutch master cylinder fits the Discovery 2 (1998-2004) with the 4.0L V8 EFI petrol engine and manual transmission, within VIN range XA232917 to 2A999999. It's for manual cars only, so automatic Discovery 2 models don't use it.
What are the signs of a failing clutch master cylinder?
A failing clutch master cylinder leaks internally and loses pressure, giving a soft or sinking clutch pedal and incomplete disengagement on the Discovery 2. You may struggle to select gears or notice fluid dropping in the reservoir. It's a direct replacement for the original pedal-box unit.
What's involved in fitting a clutch master cylinder?
Fitting the clutch master cylinder on a Discovery 2 means disconnecting it at the pedal box and the hydraulic line, then bleeding the clutch circuit afterwards to remove air. Bleeding is essential, as trapped air gives the same soft pedal as the worn cylinder you replaced.
