Differential Cover is the pressed plate that closes the differential aperture in the axle casing, retaining the axle oil and giving access to the crown wheel and differential unit without the axle having to come out.

It bolts to the machined face of the casing on a gasket and is common to the front and rear axle. This is the plain version, with no aperture in the plate.

The cover comes off first when crown wheel and pinion condition is being checked, and is worth renewing rather than refitting if the sealing flange has been distorted by over-tightening or damaged by grounding - a bowed flange will not seal against a new gasket.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LR151 differential cover for?
The LR151 differential cover is the pressed plate that closes the differential aperture in the axle casing, sealing the axle oil and giving access to the crown wheel. It bolts to the casing on a gasket and is common to both front and rear axles. This is the plain, no-hole version.
What does No Hole mean and how is this cover different?
No Hole means the plate has no aperture, unlike covers with a drain or inspection hole. Choose this version if your axle doesn't use a cover-mounted fitting. Check your existing cover before ordering so you match the plain plate.
Which axles does the LR151 cover fit?
Fits the Defender 1983-2016, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic and Series II/IIA/III. It does not fit Salisbury or P38 axles. Confirm your axle type before ordering, as the wrong cover won't seal against the casing face.
Should I reuse or replace the cover?
Replace the differential cover rather than refit it if the sealing flange is distorted from over-tightening or damaged by grounding. A bowed flange won't seal against a new gasket. Always fit a new gasket when refitting.
