What does the RTC3485 speedometer cable do?

The RTC3485 speedometer cable transmits rotational drive from the gearbox output to the speedometer head on Land Rover Series II, IIA and III models with the 2.6-litre 6-cylinder petrol engine. It converts gearbox rotation into the road speed shown on the instrument panel.

Why do speedometer cables fail?

Speedometer cables usually fail when the inner cable frays or snaps, or the outer sheath kinks, causing a jumpy or dead needle. On Series II, IIA and III vehicles a dry or worn cable is a common cause of erratic speed readings. A new cable restores a steady reading.
