Frequently asked questions

What does the FRC7437 collapsible spacer do inside the transfer box?
It's a crush spacer fitted inside the LT230 transfer box that sets correct bearing preload as it's progressively collapsed during assembly. It's single-use, once crushed to set the preload it can't be reused, so a new one is needed every time the transfer box is rebuilt.
Does this need replacing every time the transfer box is opened up?
Yes, typically. Because the spacer only works by being crushed once to the correct preload, reusing an old one won't set the bearings correctly, so it should be replaced as standard on any LT230 rebuild or bearing service.
Is this a DIY job or does it need a specialist?
This is normally specialist work. Setting transfer box bearing preload with a collapsible spacer needs a torque wrench, feeler gauges or a preload check tool, and experience judging rotational drag, so it's best left to a gearbox specialist or an experienced home mechanic with the right equipment.
Which Land Rover transfer boxes use this spacer?
It fits the LT230 transfer box used across the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic. The LT230 was used over a long production run across several models, so confirm your vehicle has this transfer box before ordering.
