Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC5105 swivel ball?
The FTC5105 is the swivel ball housing (swivel pin bearing housing) on the front axle. It carries the constant-velocity joint and lets the front wheels steer while driving. It fits the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic front axles.
Does the FTC5105 fit vehicles with ABS?
Fitment depends on ABS and VIN. On the Defender 90/110/127/130 the FTC5105 covers non-ABS axles up to VIN KA930455 (axle codes 20L to 23L). On Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic (from JA610294) it's the version with four-wheel ABS. Check your VIN and ABS setup before ordering.
What should be checked or replaced with the swivel ball?
When renewing the FTC5105 swivel ball, inspect the swivel bearings, oil seals and CV joint, as these wear together. The housing has two bearing bores, one shouldered and one open, so match your bearings correctly. Renew the swivel seals and gaiter to keep the joint clean.
What are the signs a swivel ball needs replacing?
A worn or pitted FTC5105 swivel ball typically causes steering roughness, knocking on full lock, or oil and grease leaks from the swivel housing. Corrosion and scoring on the ball surface are common on older axles. A damaged ball chews through seals and lets the joint run dry.
