Platform Overview

Range Rover Sport L320: platform and variants

The Range Rover Sport L320 was produced from 2005 to 2013. It is the first generation of the Range Rover Sport line and carries the chassis designation L320. The vehicle is built on the Integrated Body Frame (IBF) platform, a separate-chassis architecture shared with the Land Rover Discovery 3 (L319). This platform is distinct from the monocoque L322 Range Rover. The IBF construction means suspension mounts, body mounts, drivetrain tunnels, and underbody components are architecturally related to the Discovery 3, not the full-size Range Rover.

Production ran across two distinct build periods. The pre-facelift range (2005 to 2009) used the 2.7 TDV6 (engine code 276DT) and the 4.2 litre Supercharged V8 (AJ33S) as its primary variants. The facelift range (2010 to 2013) introduced the 3.0 TDV6 (engine code 306DT) as the primary diesel replacement, along with the 5.0 V8 and 5.0 Supercharged (AJ133). The 3.6 TDV8 (engine code 368DT) and 4.4 V8 (AJ41) were offered across both periods.

This distinction matters when ordering parts. Service kits, oil filters, timing components, and engine-specific hardware are not interchangeable between the 276DT and 306DT. If you are unsure which engine your vehicle has, confirm using the engine code stamped on the block or by decoding your VIN before ordering.

Fitment

Confirming fitment: pre-facelift vs facelift

The two main build periods share a chassis code but differ in engine, gearbox calibration, suspension electronics, and several bodywork components. When ordering parts, confirm which build period applies to your vehicle.

The simplest method is to check your VIN. The 10th character of your 17-digit VIN encodes the model year. This Land Rover VIN identification guide explains how to decode this character for your exact build year.

For engine parts specifically, the engine code is stamped on the block and is also recorded on the V5C or registration document. Matching the engine code to the correct parts listing is the most reliable way to confirm fitment before purchase.
