Frequently asked questions

What does this rear shock absorber do?
This rear shock absorber mounts between the rear axle and the chassis bracket and controls spring oscillation through compression and rebound. It limits axle movement to keep the tyres in contact with the road and steady the ride. It's the Girling short-wheelbase rear damper.
What does SWB mean and which Land Rover does it fit?
SWB means short wheelbase, the 88 model. This rear shock absorber fits the Series II and IIA (1958-1971) 88 only. The longer 109 wheelbase uses a different damper, so check your wheelbase before ordering.
Should both rear shock absorbers be replaced together?
Replacing rear shock absorbers in a pair is usually the better approach, so damping stays even from side to side. A single new damper alongside a worn one can give uneven rear ride control on the 88.
What are the signs a shock absorber is worn?
Worn shock absorbers typically cause a bouncy or floaty ride, poor control over bumps, and sometimes oil weeping down the body of the damper. Renew the rear dampers if they're leaking or no longer controlling axle movement.
