Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC4232 rear shock absorber do on a Defender 90 or Series?
The RTC4232 is a hydraulic rear shock absorber for the short-wheelbase chassis, mounted between the rear axle and the rear chassis bracket. It controls spring oscillation to maintain tyre contact and ride stability through compression and rebound, on Defender 90 and Series 88-inch vehicles.
How many rear shock absorbers does a full rear axle replacement take?
Two are needed for a complete rear axle change, one per side. The RTC4232 is a single unit. Rear shocks are typically replaced in pairs so both sides have matched damping, which is especially important on load-carrying Defenders and off-road use.
What are the signs of a worn rear shock absorber on a Series or Defender 90?
Typical signs of a worn rear shock include tail bounce after road imperfections, wheel hop under load, and the rear of the vehicle squatting excessively when loaded. On rough terrain, a worn rear damper also reduces rear axle articulation control, causing instability on uneven ground.
