Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC4230 front shock absorber do on a Defender 90 or Series?
The RTC4230 is a hydraulic front shock absorber for the short-wheelbase chassis, mounted between the front axle and the chassis bracket. It controls spring oscillation through compression and rebound, keeping the front wheels in contact with the road and limiting body roll and bounce on Defender 90 and Series 88-inch.
How many front shock absorbers are needed for a complete front replacement?
Two are needed for a full front axle change, one per side. The RTC4230 is supplied as a single unit. Replacing both front shocks at the same time maintains even damping across the axle and gives a consistent ride and handling improvement.
Why do front shock absorbers fail on a Defender 90 or Series, and what are the signs?
Front shocks on these Land Rovers typically fail through hydraulic fluid leaks past the piston seal, causing loss of damping. Signs include excessive body bounce after bumps, vague steering feel, and nose-diving under braking. Heavy off-road use and age accelerate wear on the front axle significantly.
