Frequently asked questions

What does the carburettor manifold gasket 278163 seal?
The carburettor manifold gasket 278163 seals between the carburettor base and the inlet manifold on 2.25L petrol engines. It fits Series 2/2A/3 with the 2.25L petrol engine and Defender variants with carburettor-equipped petrol engines. Cross-references are PLB660 and BR 1417.
How many gaskets do I need if a spacer plate is fitted between the carburettor and manifold?
Two gaskets are required when an inlet manifold spacer or adaptor plate is fitted: one at each mating face of the spacer. This applies to Series 2/2A/3 2.25L petrol applications with the manifold spacer. Order two and renew both whenever the carburettor is removed.
What happens if the carburettor manifold gasket fails?
A failed gasket at the inlet side causes an air leak that leans out the fuel mixture, typically producing rough idle, hunting, or difficult starting on the 2.25L petrol engine. A failed gasket at the exhaust face causes an exhaust leak and the characteristic blowing sound at the manifold joint.
