Frequently asked questions

What is the Drain Plug (540870) used for?
The Drain Plug threads into the drain point at the base of a casing to retain the oil in service. On Series 1, 2 and 3 Land Rovers it's used on the gearbox, transfer box and axle housings, and is removed to drain the unit at oil changes.
Does the same plug fit the gearbox, transfer box and axles?
Yes. The same drain plug is shared across the manual gearbox, transfer box and axle casings on Series Land Rovers, so one part covers all three drain points.
How many drain plugs do I need for an oil service?
Typically one per casing. The gearbox, transfer box and each axle have their own drain point, so a full driveline oil change usually needs several plugs if you're renewing them all.
