Frequently asked questions

What is the ERC1029 connecting rod nut used for?
The ERC1029 is the big-end nut that secures the connecting rod cap to the rod bolts. It clamps the bearing cap onto the crankshaft journal, holding the big-end shell bearings in place under load. It has a 3/8" UNF thread and fits the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder engines.
Can the connecting rod nut be reused?
Connecting rod nuts are normally renewed whenever the big-end caps are disturbed. Reusing a stretched or fatigued nut risks it loosening under load, which can wreck the engine. Fit new nuts as standard during a bottom-end rebuild and torque to the workshop manual specification.
How many connecting rod nuts are needed for an engine?
Typically each connecting rod uses two big-end nuts, so a 4-cylinder engine needs eight in total. It's good practice to renew the full set when the big ends are apart rather than mixing old and new. The ERC1029 is sold individually.
Which engines does the ERC1029 nut fit?
The ERC1029 connecting rod nut fits Series 2 and 3 with the 2.25L petrol and diesel, and the Defender 1987-2006 with 2.25L petrol, 2.5L petrol, and 2.5L NA and turbo diesel 4-cylinder engines. It carries Land Rover reference ETC5155.
