What does this breather hose do?

The breather hose routes crankcase blow-by gases and oil vapour from the camshaft cover to the inlet manifold, where they're drawn back into combustion. It's part of the crankcase ventilation system on the four-cylinder diesel engines.

Which engines does it fit, and which does it not?

It fits the 2.25 and 2.5 four-cylinder diesel engines, naturally aspirated and turbo diesel, in the Series 2 and 3 and the Defender. It does not fit the TDi or Td5 engines, so check your engine type first.

Why should a perished breather hose be replaced?

A split or perished breather hose lets oil vapour escape and stops the crankcase venting properly, which can build pressure and push oil past seals. The rubber hardens and cracks with age, so renew it once it's perished.
