Kernplug - Expansieopening Cilinderblok is een geperst stalen afdichtingsplug die in de buitenkant van het cilinderblok is geïnstalleerd om de gietopeningen die tijdens de motorproductie zijn gevormd, af te sluiten.

Deze openingen ontstaan als onderdeel van het zandgietproces en moeten worden afgedicht om koelvloeistof in de interne watermantel van het blok te houden. De plug zit in een machinaal bewerkte boring in de cilinderblokwand en wordt erin gedrukt om een strakke perspassing te vormen. Vervanging is nodig wanneer corrosie, vorstschade of lekkende koelvloeistof aangeeft dat de plug defect is of uit zijn boring begint te komen.
