It fits beneath a threaded plug or at a metal-to-metal joint and deforms as it is tightened, taking up surface irregularities to form a gas- and fluid-tight seal. Used in several sealing positions including the fuel tank drain plug and manifold joints. As a crush washer it should be renewed whenever the joint is disturbed.
