Sump Plug Washer - copper sealing washer for the sump drain plug and thermostat housing on petrol and early diesel engines.
The copper washer seats between the plug or bolt head and the mating aluminium or cast-iron surface. Under torque, the soft copper deforms to fill surface imperfections and create an oil-tight seal. Replacing the washer at each oil drain prevents seepage from a work-hardened washer that can no longer conform to the mating surface.
