Rocker Cover Washer used at the rocker (valve) cover fixing on the cylinder head.

Fitted beneath the rocker cover retaining nut, the washer seals the fastening point against oil weeping from the valvetrain. Used on the 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol engine, where the same washer also seals the breather fixing on later applications. It is replaced whenever the rocker cover is removed to maintain an oil-tight seal.

What is the rocker cover washer for?

The rocker cover washer seals the rocker (valve) cover fixing on the cylinder head. It sits under the retaining nut and stops oil weeping from the valvetrain at the fastening point. Fitted to the 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol engine in Series 2/3 and Defender, where later applications also use it on the breather fixing.

How many rocker cover washers do I need?

You'll typically need one washer per rocker cover fixing, and it's worth replacing them all together. On later 2.25L petrol applications the same washer also seals the breather fixing, so count that point too. Renew them whenever the rocker cover comes off to keep an oil-tight seal.

Can the rocker cover washer be reused?

Replace the rocker cover washer rather than reuse it. Once it's been clamped under the nut it takes a set and won't seal as well a second time, so old washers tend to weep oil. It's a low-cost item that's renewed as standard whenever the rocker cover is removed.
