Lock Washer for the starting dog at the front of the crankshaft.

The starting dog threads into the nose of the crankshaft to retain the front pulley and provide the engagement point for a hand starting handle. This lock washer secures the dog against the loads of cranking and running so that it cannot work loose. Used on the 2.0L and 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and renewed each time the starting dog is disturbed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the starting dog lock washer do?
The starting dog lock washer secures the starting dog at the front of the crankshaft so it can't work loose. The dog threads into the nose of the crankshaft to hold the front pulley and give a hand crank a point to engage. Used on the 2.0L and 2.25L 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
Should the lock washer be replaced when removing the starting dog?
Replace the lock washer every time the starting dog is disturbed. It's folded over to lock the dog against cranking and running loads, so once it's been bent and straightened it won't hold reliably. A fresh washer keeps the crankshaft pulley retention secure on these 2.0L and 2.25L Series engines.
Where is the starting dog on the engine?
The starting dog sits at the front nose of the crankshaft, behind the front pulley, on 2.0L and 2.25L 4-cylinder Series engines. It's the threaded fitting that retains the pulley and accepts a hand starting handle. The lock washer fits against it to stop it backing off in service.
