Frequently asked questions

What does the valve collet do?
The valve collet is a split cotter that seats in the groove of the valve stem and locks the valve cup against the spring, holding the valve closed under spring pressure. It fits the single-groove valves of the 2.25L petrol and 2.0L diesel engines. Fits Land Rover Series 2 and 3 and early Defender.
Are these for single-groove or multi-groove valves?
These collets suit single-groove valve stems on the 2.25L engine, not the later multi-groove valves. Check your valve type before ordering, as multi-groove valves use collets with extra ridges. Fitting the wrong collet stops the cup locking correctly. Used on Land Rover Series 2 and 3.
How many collets are needed per valve?
Valve collets are typically used in pairs, so two collets retain each valve, meaning sixteen for a full 4-cylinder 2.25L head. Order the matching valve cups at the same time. Replace any collets that are worn or no longer grip the stem groove cleanly.
