Differential Crown Wheel Locking Tab is a tab washer used in the axle differential assembly to lock and retain the crown wheel bolts after tightening.

Fitted between the bolt head and the crown wheel flange, the tabs are bent up against the bolt flats after torquing to prevent the bolts from loosening under the rotational and shock loads transmitted through the differential. Replacement is recommended whenever the differential is dismantled, as tab washers should not be re-bent once used.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Locker (272922) used for?
The Locker is a crown wheel locking tab washer that sits in the axle differential. It fits between the crown wheel bolt heads and the crown wheel flange, and the tabs are bent up against the bolt flats after tightening to stop them working loose under load. Fits Land Rover Series 1, Series 2 and 3, and Range Rover Classic up to 1994.
Can the Locker tab washer be reused?
No, the Locker should be replaced every time the differential is dismantled. Once the tabs have been bent against the bolts and later straightened, the metal is fatigued and won't lock reliably again. Fit a new tab washer whenever you disturb the crown wheel bolts.
How many locking tabs does a differential rebuild need?
The number of Lockers needed depends on your differential's crown wheel bolt layout, so check how many tab washers come out when the diff is stripped. They're sold individually and typically renewed as a complete set during an axle rebuild on Series and Range Rover Classic models.
