Frequently asked questions

What is the main casing stud used for?
The main casing stud secures the gearbox top cover to the upper face of the main gearbox casing on Series 2, 2A and 3. It threads into the casing so the top cover can be clamped down onto the joint face.
How does the stud hold the gearbox top cover?
The stud works with a nut and spring washer to clamp the gearbox top cover onto the casing joint face. The stud stays fixed in the casing while the nut is undone to lift the cover, which protects the casing threads from wear.
How many studs hold the gearbox top cover?
Several studs typically run around the gearbox top cover to clamp it evenly to the main casing on Series 2/2A/3. Check how many your cover uses and the condition of each, since a stretched or corroded stud is best renewed while the cover is off.
