Speedometer Cable – LHD is the mechanical drive cable that transmits road speed to the speedometer. The rotating inner core runs inside a protective outer sheath from the speedometer drive on the transfer box to the rear of the speedometer head, turning the instrument mechanism in proportion to road speed.

This is the left-hand-drive cable, routed and cut to length for the LHD dashboard position, for 4-cylinder applications.

A dry, kinked or fraying inner core is the usual cause of a noisy, jumpy or sticking speedometer needle. The core should be kept lightly lubricated, and a cable that has started to break up internally should be renewed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the LHD speedometer cable do?
The speedometer cable is the mechanical drive that transmits road speed to the speedometer. Its rotating inner core runs inside a protective outer sheath from the speedometer drive on the transfer box to the back of the speedometer head. This is the left-hand-drive cable, cut to length for the LHD dashboard, for 4-cylinder applications.
Why does a speedometer cable make the needle jump?
A dry, kinked or fraying inner core is the usual cause of a noisy, jumpy or sticking speedometer needle. Keeping the core lightly lubricated helps, but once the cable starts breaking up internally it should be renewed. A seized core can also snap, leaving the speedometer dead.
Is this cable for left-hand-drive vehicles?
This is the left-hand-drive speedometer cable, with the length and routing for the LHD dashboard position on 4-cylinder vehicles. Right-hand-drive cars use a different length, so confirm your vehicle is LHD. On early Range Rover Classic, check the VIN against the listed build breaks.
