Engine Stud - a threaded manifold stud fitted to the exhaust system of the diesel engine.

It threads into the cylinder head to provide a fixed anchor for mounting the exhaust manifold, allowing the manifold to be clamped down with a nut while accommodating the thermal expansion that occurs under exhaust heat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the engine stud used for?
This engine stud is an exhaust manifold stud for the diesel engine. It threads into the cylinder head and gives a fixed anchor to clamp the exhaust manifold down with a nut, while letting the manifold expand and contract under exhaust heat without loosening.
How many studs are needed and which engines?
You typically need several manifold studs per engine, so it's worth replacing the full set if any are corroded. This stud suits the early diesel engines, the 2.0 diesel on the Series II and the 2.25 diesel on the Series IIA. It's supplied individually.
Can I fit this manifold stud at home?
Fitting a manifold stud is typically a home-mechanic job once the old stud is out. A seized or snapped stud usually needs extracting with a stud remover or the double-nut method, and the head threads should be cleaned first. Fit the new stud, then torque the manifold nut to the manual specification.
