Frequently asked questions

What does the fuel cut-off switch do?
The fuel cut-off switch is a fuel stop solenoid mounted on the diesel injection pump, controlling fuel flow into the pump's metering circuit. When de-energised it shuts off the fuel to stop the engine; energising the solenoid opens the circuit so the engine can run.
Which engines is this switch fitted to?
This fuel cut-off solenoid is fitted to the 2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.5L turbo diesel injection pumps on the Land Rover Defender (1986-2006). Confirm your Defender runs one of these 2.5L diesel pumps before ordering, as other pumps use different solenoids.
What are the signs the fuel cut-off switch is failing?
A failing fuel cut-off solenoid typically shows as an engine that won't shut off when you turn the key off, or one that won't start because fuel isn't reaching the pump. Wiring and connections should usually be checked before condemning the solenoid.
