Clutch Slave Cylinder is the hydraulic actuator in the clutch release circuit, mounted externally on the gearbox bellhousing.

When the clutch pedal is depressed, hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder extends the slave cylinder pushrod, which pivots the clutch release fork to withdraw the release bearing and disengage the clutch.

Compatible with the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox. Not suitable for V8 applications.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Clutch Slave Cylinder 591231 do on a Land Rover?
The clutch slave cylinder is the hydraulic actuator in the clutch release circuit, mounted externally on the LT77 gearbox bellhousing. When the pedal is depressed, it extends a pushrod that pivots the release fork and withdraws the bearing to disengage the clutch. It fits the 5-speed manual LT77 gearbox on Defender 1987-2006 (4-cyl) and Series 3.
Does this slave cylinder work on V8-engined Land Rovers?
No. This slave cylinder is specific to the external hydraulic clutch release on LT77 5-speed manual gearboxes fitted to 4-cylinder Defender (1987-2006) and Series 3 2.25L and 2.6L petrol models. It's not suitable for V8 applications, which use a different clutch release arrangement.
What are the signs that the clutch slave cylinder needs replacing?
A failing slave cylinder typically shows as a spongy or sinking clutch pedal, inability to fully disengage the clutch, or visible hydraulic fluid weeping around the slave cylinder body or from the bleed nipple. Difficulty selecting gears at rest usually points to slave cylinder failure on LT77-equipped Defenders.
How do I confirm part 591231 fits my Defender or Series?
This part fits Defender 1987-2006 with a 4-cylinder engine and Series 3 with 2.25L or 2.6L 6-cyl petrol. It does not fit V8 variants. Cross-references include FRC8531 and BR 3021.
