Clutch Slave Cylinder is the hydraulic actuator in the clutch release circuit, mounted externally on the gearbox bellhousing.

When the clutch pedal is depressed, hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder extends the slave cylinder pushrod, which pivots the clutch release fork to withdraw the release bearing and disengage the clutch.

Compatible with the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox. Not suitable for V8 applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 591231 clutch slave cylinder and what does it do?
The 591231 clutch slave cylinder is the hydraulic actuator in the clutch release circuit, mounted on the gearbox bellhousing. When you press the clutch pedal, pressure from the master cylinder extends its pushrod, pivoting the release fork to disengage the clutch. This is the Delphi unit for the LT77 gearbox.
What are the signs a clutch slave cylinder is failing?
A failing clutch slave cylinder usually shows as a clutch pedal that sinks to the floor or feels spongy, difficulty selecting gears, or fluid leaking around the bellhousing. As the internal seal wears it stops holding pressure. It's typically replaced together with the master cylinder.
Which gearbox and engines does this slave cylinder fit?
This slave cylinder fits the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006) with the 4-cylinder LT77 5-speed manual gearbox, and the Series 3 with 2.25L petrol or 2.6L 6-cylinder petrol engines. It's not suitable for V8 applications. Check which gearbox is fitted before ordering, as R380 cars use a different cylinder.
