Flame Trap is the crankcase breather filter fitted in the rocker cover breather circuit of the V8 EFI petrol engine.

Connected in the crankcase ventilation hose between the rocker cover and the intake, the flame trap filters oil mist from the breather gases and acts as a barrier against flame flashback from the induction system into the crankcase. It is a periodic service item that clogs with oil and sludge over time and is replaced to maintain correct crankcase ventilation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Flame Trap and what does it do?
The Flame Trap is the crankcase breather filter in the rocker cover breather circuit of the V8 EFI petrol engine. It filters oil mist from the breather gases and acts as a barrier against flame flashback from the intake into the crankcase. It's fitted to the Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Why does the flame trap need replacing?
The flame trap clogs with oil and sludge over time, which restricts crankcase ventilation and can raise crankcase pressure. Signs it needs replacing usually include oil leaks from seals and breather-related running issues. It's a periodic service item, so it's typically renewed during routine servicing.
Where is the flame trap fitted and how do I confirm fitment?
On the V8 EFI petrol engine the flame trap sits in the rocker cover breather circuit, in the hose between the rocker cover and the intake. It's used on the Discovery 1 (VIN FA393361 to WA799999), Range Rover Classic and the V8 Defender. Check your VIN on Discovery 1.
