Cyclone Breather Filter for the crankcase ventilation system on the four-cylinder 2.5L diesel engine (naturally aspirated, 200TDi and 300TDi).

Mounted to the side of the engine block, the unit acts as an oil vapour separator: crankcase gases pass through the cyclone chamber where oil mist is condensed and drained back to the sump, while the cleaned air is vented to the intake. This keeps oil vapour out of the air intake.

The filter is prone to clogging in service, and a blocked unit can allow oil to be drawn into the intake and cause smoking or fouling. It is therefore a routine maintenance replacement item.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR1471 breather filter do on a TDi engine?
The ERR1471 breather filter sits in the crankcase ventilation system, filtering oil vapour before it's returned to the intake tract. It prevents oil mist from contaminating the intercooler and air intake on 200TDi and 300TDi engines in the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic.
What happens if the crankcase breather filter is blocked?
A blocked breather filter typically causes crankcase pressure to build, leading to oil leaks at gaskets and seals, increased oil consumption, and oil mist entering the intake. On TDi engines it can also contaminate the intercooler over time.
Are the 200TDi and 300TDi breather filters the same part?
Yes, ERR1471 fits both 200TDi and 300TDi engines. On the Discovery 1 there's a VIN split: 200TDi runs to VIN LA081991 and 300TDi from VIN MA081992. On the Defender, both engine variants share this breather filter throughout the 1987-2006 production run.
