Thermostat for the 2.5L 300TDi diesel engine, operating within the thermostat housing at the top of the cooling circuit.

The thermostat regulates coolant flow between the engine and the radiator based on coolant temperature. Below the opening threshold, coolant is directed through the bypass circuit to accelerate warm-up and maintain consistent operating temperature; once the thermostat opens, it allows full coolant circulation through the radiator.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR3291 thermostat do on a 300TDi engine?
The ERR3291 is an 88°C thermostat for the 2.5L 300TDi diesel. It controls coolant flow to the radiator, opening at 88°C to allow the engine to reach and maintain correct operating temperature. It fits the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic with 300TDi engines.
What are the symptoms of a failing thermostat on a 300TDi?
A thermostat stuck open causes the engine to run below normal temperature, with reduced heater output and increased fuel consumption. One stuck closed leads to overheating. Both failure modes typically show as the temperature gauge sitting unusually high or low.
How is this thermostat different from the 200TDi version?
Both the 200TDi and 300TDi thermostats open at 88°C, but they aren't interchangeable. ERR3291 is the 300TDi-specific part. Confirm your engine code before ordering, as fitting the wrong thermostat risks incorrect temperature regulation.
