Crankshaft Oil Seal seals the front timing cover where the crankshaft nose passes through it.

Fitted to the 2.5L 300 TDi diesel engine, the seal runs against the crankshaft pulley/damper hub sealing face to retain oil within the front cover and prevent leakage at the front of the engine. Renewal is recommended whenever the front cover, timing belt or crankshaft pulley is disturbed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the front crankshaft oil seal and what does it do?
This crankshaft oil seal sits in the front timing cover where the crankshaft nose passes through it. On the 2.5L 300 TDi diesel, it runs against the crankshaft pulley sealing face to retain oil within the front cover and prevent leakage at the front of the engine.
Which Land Rovers does this front seal fit?
This front crankshaft seal fits the 2.5L 300 TDi diesel in the Land Rover Defender up to 2006, Discovery 1 (including EGR), and Range Rover Classic. It's the front cover outer crankshaft seal, made by Corteco.
When should this front crankshaft seal be replaced?
Renew the front crankshaft oil seal whenever the front cover, timing belt, or crankshaft pulley is disturbed. It's an inexpensive seal that's awkward to reach, so fitting a new one during a timing belt job avoids stripping the front of the engine again.
What are the signs the front crank seal is leaking?
A leaking front crankshaft seal typically shows as oil around the crankshaft pulley and front timing cover, oil thrown onto the timing belt area, or oil collecting at the front of the sump. A failing seal can contaminate the timing belt, so renew it promptly.
