Camshaft Sprocket - GEMS V8 is the timing chain sprocket fitted to the camshaft of the Rover GEMS 4.0L and 4.6L V8 petrol engine.

The sprocket is driven by the primary timing chain from the crankshaft sprocket, synchronising camshaft rotation with the crankshaft to maintain correct valve timing relative to piston position. The GEMS V8 uses a single overhead camshaft per cylinder bank; the camshaft sprocket is secured to the front of the camshaft and must be correctly timed on installation to maintain accurate ignition and valve events.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GEMS V8 camshaft sprocket do?
The camshaft sprocket is the timing chain sprocket on the front of the camshaft of the Rover GEMS 4.0L and 4.6L V8 petrol engine. Driven by the primary chain from the crankshaft, it synchronises camshaft and crankshaft rotation to maintain correct valve timing. It fits GEMS V8 Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover P38.
When should the camshaft sprocket be replaced?
The camshaft sprocket is typically replaced with the timing chain when the teeth show wear, since a worn sprocket accelerates chain wear and can let timing slip. Inspect it whenever the timing cover is off. It must be correctly timed on installation to keep accurate valve and ignition events.
How do I know if I have the GEMS engine?
On the Discovery 1 the GEMS 4.0L V8 was a North American market engine (CDN/USA/MEX), so this sprocket suits those builds, plus the 4.0L GEMS Defender and the 4.0L and 4.6L GEMS Range Rover P38. Confirm your engine is GEMS and not the later Bosch Thor system before ordering.
