Airflow Meter — the hotwire mass air flow sensor for the V8 EFI engine management system.

Mounted in the intake tract between the air filter and the throttle body, it measures the mass of air entering the engine using a heated-wire element and signals the engine control unit, which uses the reading to set fuelling. Fitted to 3.9L V8 EFI hotwire injection applications, including late 3.5L EFI installations with catalyst.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR5198 hotwire airflow meter and what does it do?
The ERR5198 is the hotwire mass air flow sensor for the 3.9L V8 EFI engine. It sits in the intake tract between the air filter and throttle body, measuring incoming air mass with a heated-wire element and signalling the ECU, which uses that reading to set fuelling.
Which vehicles does this hotwire airflow meter fit?
This hotwire airflow meter fits the Discovery 1 (1989-1998) 3.9L V8 EFI from VIN FA393361 to WA799999, and the Range Rover Classic (1992-1994) 3.9L V8 EFI and late 3.5L EFI with catalyst from VIN JA610294. Use your VIN to confirm the EFI variant.
What are the signs of a failing airflow meter?
A failing airflow meter on the V8 EFI typically causes hesitation, poor idle, stalling, reduced power and worse fuel economy as the ECU gets a wrong air reading. Symptoms usually come on gradually as the heated-wire element ages.
How is the hotwire airflow meter different from the earlier flapper type?
The hotwire airflow meter measures air mass directly with a heated-wire element, while the earlier flapper, or vane, meter used a spring-loaded flap. This ERR5198 is the hotwire version for the 3.9L V8 EFI system. Check which system your engine runs before ordering.
