Timing Belt Tensioner for the 2.5L Td5 5-Cylinder Turbo Diesel engine timing system.

The tensioner pulley bears directly against the timing belt and maintains the correct running tension between the crankshaft drive sprocket and the camshaft sprocket. A correctly tensioned belt is essential for cam timing accuracy; a worn or seized tensioner allows belt slack, increasing the risk of belt jump and valve-to-piston contact.

Replace as a matter of course when renewing the timing belt.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR6951 timing belt tensioner do on a Td5 engine?
The ERR6951 tensioner maintains correct tension on the Td5 timing belt, ensuring the camshaft stays synchronised with the crankshaft. A failed tensioner allows belt slack, risking incorrect valve timing or sudden belt failure. It fits the Td5 Defender (1998-2006) and Discovery 2 (1998-2004).
What happens if the Td5 timing belt tensioner fails?
If the tensioner fails, the timing belt can slip or snap. The Td5 is an interference engine, so belt failure can cause valve-to-piston contact and severe engine damage. It's good practice to replace the tensioner whenever the timing belt is changed.
Does this tensioner fit all Discovery 2 Td5 variants?
Yes. ERR6951 fits Discovery 2 Td5 models with and without ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement), and with and without air conditioning. On the Defender, it fits Td5 models from 1998 to 2006.
