Brand Elring
Cylinder Head Gasket for the Rover V8 petrol engine, sealing the joint between one cylinder head and the engine block.

It seals the combustion chambers together with the coolant and oil galleries that cross the head-to-block face. This is the composite type gasket, the later revised design fitted to these engines.

Head gaskets should be renewed as a matched pair whenever a head is removed, and always replaced when the cylinder head is disturbed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR7217 V8 head gasket used for?
The ERR7217 head gasket seals the joint between one cylinder head and the block on the Rover V8 petrol engine. It seals the combustion chambers along with the coolant and oil galleries crossing the head face. This is the later composite type gasket fitted to 3.9, 4.0, and 4.6L V8s.
How many head gaskets does a V8 need?
A Rover V8 needs two head gaskets, one per cylinder head, and this item is a single gasket. They're renewed as a matched pair whenever a head is off, so order two to do the engine. Fitting one new and one old gasket risks uneven sealing across the banks.
What is the difference between the composite and earlier V8 head gasket?
The composite type is the later revised head gasket design for the Rover V8, replacing the earlier steel gasket. It's the type specified for 3.9, 4.0, and 4.6L engines here. If your engine was previously rebuilt, confirm which design is fitted so both banks use matching gaskets.
Why do V8 head gaskets fail?
Rover V8 head gaskets typically fail from overheating and the aluminium block's liner movement, letting coolant into the cylinders or oilways. Signs include coolant loss, white smoke, overheating, or a milky oil film. Persistent overheating usually points to head gasket or liner trouble on these engines.
