Crankshaft Oil Seal - Rear seals the rear of the crankshaft where it leaves the cylinder block at the flywheel end, retaining oil within the bottom end and keeping it off the clutch.

This is the lip-type rear main seal for the V8 petrol engine, seating in the rear main bearing housing. It is not interchangeable with the earlier rope-type seal arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rear crankshaft oil seal and what does it do?
The rear crankshaft oil seal seals the back of the crankshaft where it leaves the block at the flywheel end. It retains oil in the bottom end and keeps it off the clutch. This is the lip-type seal for the V8 petrol engine.
Does this replace the early rope-type seal?
No. This is the lip-type rear main seal and it isn't interchangeable with the earlier rope-type seal arrangement. Confirm your V8 block is set up for the lip seal before fitting, as the housings differ.
Which V8 Land Rovers does this seal fit?
This seal fits the Land Rover V8 petrol engine in the Defender 3.5 Twin Carb and 4.0 EFI, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38, plus the Series 3 Stage 1 V8.
When is the rear crankshaft seal usually replaced?
The rear crankshaft seal is typically replaced when it leaks oil at the bellhousing, or while the gearbox and clutch are already out for other work. Access needs the gearbox removed, so many owners renew it during a clutch job.
