Frequently asked questions

What does the Sump Gasket 602087 seal on the Rover V8?
The sump gasket seals the joint between the oil sump and the bottom face of the engine block, forming an oil-tight seal at the base of the Rover V8 engine. It's replaced whenever the sump is removed for service, or when oil leaks from the sump joint are detected. On early Range Rover Classic (to VIN HA610293), it also serves as the sump oil strainer gasket.
Which V8 variants does Sump Gasket 602087 fit?
It fits the Rover V8 in Defender (1987-2006, 3.5L Twin Carb and 4.0L EFI), Discovery 1 (1989-1998, 3.5L Twin Carb and V8 EFI), Range Rover Classic (1986-1994, Twin Carb and EFI), and Series III Stage 1 V8. Confirm your engine code before ordering, as V8 sump designs vary between generations.
Does the sump gasket need replacing every time the sump is removed?
Yes. The V8 sump gasket compresses and deforms when first torqued down and can't provide a reliable re-seal if reused. Replace it every time the sump is removed to avoid oil leaks after reassembly. The cross-reference is BR 3471.
What causes sump oil leaks on the Rover V8?
Sump gasket failure on the Rover V8 typically results from engine vibration over many years, heat cycling causing gasket degradation, or overtightening the sump bolts which distorts the sump flange. Oil leaks from the sump joint are a common maintenance item on high-mileage Series, Defender, and Range Rover Classic V8s.
