Frequently asked questions

What does the FRC4493 gearbox oil seal do?
The FRC4493 oil seal seals the extension case of the LT77 five-speed gearbox, running on the mainshaft output collar at the rear of the box. It retains transmission oil and keeps dirt out where the gearbox meets the propshaft.
Which Land Rovers use the FRC4493 LT77 seal?
The FRC4493 fits the Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic with the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox. It covers the extension case and oil pump collar, to suffix F and from suffix G, so confirm your gearbox suffix by VIN if unsure.
How do I know the extension case seal needs replacing?
A worn extension case oil seal typically shows as an oil leak at the rear of the gearbox, near the propshaft flange. It's usually renewed whenever the propshaft or mainshaft flange is disturbed, since access requires removing the flange first.
Should the FRC4493 oil seal be reused?
No, gearbox oil seals like the FRC4493 are typically single-use and should be renewed whenever the mainshaft flange or propshaft is removed. A reused seal often leaks because the sealing lip has taken a set against the collar, so fit a new one on reassembly.
