Viscous Fan Coupling - temperature-sensitive drive coupling between the water pump drive and the engine cooling fan.

It modulates fan speed with under-bonnet temperature, engaging to drive the fan when cooling airflow demand is high and freewheeling when the load is low, which reduces parasitic drag, fuel consumption and fan noise. Fitted to 2.5 turbo diesel, 200 TDi and 300 TDi engines.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016
Land Rover Discovery 1 1989-1998 (L318)
Range Rover Classic up to 1994
Fitment Notes Defender — 2.5TD, 200TDi, 300TDi
Discovery 1 — 200TDi, 300TDi
Range Rover Classic — 200TDi, 300TDi

Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC7238 viscous fan coupling do?
The ETC7238 is a temperature-sensitive coupling that drives the engine cooling fan from the water pump pulley. It engages the fan when under-bonnet temperature is high and freewheels when cooling demand is low, cutting drag, fuel use and fan noise. Fitted to 2.5 TD, 200TDi and 300TDi engines.
Which Land Rovers is this viscous coupling for?
This viscous coupling fits the Defender (up to 2016), Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic running the 2.5 turbo diesel, 200TDi or 300TDi engine. It's engine-specific rather than model-specific, so confirm your engine is one of these before ordering.
What are the signs of a failed viscous fan coupling?
A failing viscous coupling typically shows up as engine overheating in traffic, because the fan no longer locks up to pull air through the radiator. The opposite fault is a coupling that stays engaged, giving a constant roar and sluggish warm-up. Both point to replacement.
Can I fit the viscous coupling myself?
Fitting a viscous coupling is typically a DIY-friendly job on the 200TDi and 300TDi. The main challenge is the large coupling nut, which can be tight, so a fan clutch tool or suitable spanner to hold the pulley while you release it makes the job much easier.
