Baulk Ring for the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox synchromesh assembly.

The baulk ring is the friction cone element of the synchromesh unit. It contacts the gear cone during a gear change to synchronise the speeds of the mainshaft and the selected gear before dog engagement. This part is fitted to the mainshaft gear set covering 1st, 2nd and 5th gears in the LT77 gearbox. A worn baulk ring typically presents as gear crunch or baulking when changing into the affected gear. Sold individually.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC4007 baulk ring used for?
The FTC4007 baulk ring is the synchromesh friction cone for the LT77 5-speed manual gearbox. During a shift it matches the speeds of the mainshaft and the selected gear so the dog teeth engage without clashing. It's fitted to the mainshaft gear set covering 1st, 2nd and 5th gears.
What's the difference between the LT77 and R380 baulk ring?
The FTC4007 is the baulk ring for the earlier LT77 gearbox, not the later R380. The two gearboxes use different synchromesh parts, so check which unit your vehicle has before ordering. The LT77 was fitted to earlier Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic models before the R380 replaced it.
What are the signs the LT77 baulk ring needs replacing?
A worn LT77 baulk ring typically shows as crunching or baulking when changing into 1st, 2nd or 5th gear, the gears this ring serves. The problem is often worse when the oil is cold. Ignoring it leads to harder shifts and accelerated wear on the gear dog teeth.
How do I confirm the FTC4007 fits my gearbox?
The FTC4007 fits the LT77 5-speed gearbox in the Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (from VIN FA393361) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, from VIN JA610294). Confirm your gearbox is an LT77 and not the later R380, since the baulk rings aren't interchangeable between the two.
