Track Rod End - Cross Rod Eye is the ball-jointed eye end of the steering cross rod, in the steering linkage.
It screws into the end of the cross rod tube and locates in the tapered bore of the steering arm on the swivel housing, transmitting steering movement across the axle. Because the shank is threaded, the effective rod length is adjustable - front wheel tracking must be checked and reset after fitting. This is the right-hand-drive linkage specification.
The ball joint is a wearing part. A split or perished boot lets water and grit into the joint, and the resulting play shows up as steering wander, knocking over rough ground and uneven tyre wear.
