Steering Column Lock for diesel applications, mounted on the upper steering column.

The assembly clamps around the column and combines the anti-theft steering lock with the ignition and starter switch. With the key removed, a spring-loaded bolt engages the column to lock the steering; turning the key withdraws the bolt and operates the switch positions that control the auxiliary, run and start circuits. The diesel version carries the switch arrangement appropriate to compression-ignition engines.

Frequently asked questions

What does the steering column lock do?
The steering column lock combines the anti-theft steering lock with the ignition and starter switch on the upper steering column. With the key removed, a spring-loaded bolt engages the column to lock the steering. Turning the key withdraws the bolt and operates the auxiliary, run and start circuits.
Why is this the diesel version, and what does it fit?
This is the diesel version, carrying the switch arrangement matched to compression-ignition engines. It fits the 2.5 diesel Defender (naturally aspirated and TD, but not TDi or Td5) and the Series 2 and 3 with the 2.25 diesel engine. It's a Lucas unit, so match it to your exact engine.
What are the signs a steering column lock is failing?
A failing steering column lock typically shows as a key that's hard to turn, a steering lock that won't release, or intermittent ignition and starter operation. Because the unit combines the lock bolt with the ignition switch, wear in either function means renewing the assembly. Don't leave a sticking lock unattended.
