Brand Lucas
Contact Set for the Lucas distributor fitted to Land Rover petrol engines, comprising the breaker point assembly within the conventional ignition system.

The contact set mounts inside the distributor and interrupts the primary ignition circuit to trigger the high-voltage coil discharge at each firing event. A standard service replacement item, the contact set is inspected and renewed as part of a routine ignition tune-up on vehicles with conventional (non-electronic) ignition.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC6627G contact set do?
The RTC6627G contact set is the breaker points assembly inside the Lucas distributor. It interrupts the primary ignition circuit to trigger the coil discharge at each firing event. This is the sliding contact set type used on four cylinder petrol Land Rovers with conventional ignition.
Which vehicles and engines does this contact set fit?
This contact set fits the Land Rover Defender from 1983 to 2006 with the 2.25 or 2.5 litre four cylinder petrol engine, and Series II, IIA and III with the 2.25 petrol, in both cases with the Lucas distributor. It doesn't suit vehicles converted to electronic ignition.
How do I know if I have a sliding contact set?
A sliding contact set has the fixed contact plate held by a single screw and slot, adjusted by sliding it against the cam before locking. The alternative pivoting type hinges on a post instead. Take the distributor cap and rotor off and look at how the fixed contact mounts.
What are the signs contact points need replacing?
Misfire, hard starting, uneven idle and a drop in performance are the usual signs. Points typically pit and burn where the contact faces transfer material, and the rubbing block wears down over time, which closes the gap and retards ignition timing. Check the faces for pitting when inspecting.
Can contact points be changed at home?
Changing contact points is typically a straightforward home job with a screwdriver and feeler gauges. The points gap or dwell must be set to the workshop manual specification after fitting, and ignition timing checked with a strobe, since a new rubbing block alters the timing.
