Distributor Cap for the Lucas distributor fitted to the four-cylinder petrol engine, part of the ignition system.

The cap seats over the distributor body and carries the high-tension current from the rotor arm to each spark plug lead in turn, distributing the spark to the cylinders in firing order. The central king-lead terminal feeds the coil output to the rotor beneath. A cracked or internally tracked cap causes misfires and hard starting, so it is renewed as part of routine ignition servicing.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC3278 distributor cap do?
RTC3278 is the Lucas distributor cap for the Land Rover 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine. It seats over the distributor body and routes high-tension current from the central king-lead terminal to each spark plug lead in firing order via the rotor arm.
Why does the distributor cap fail and what are the symptoms?
The cap typically fails through internal carbon tracking, surface cracking or contact corrosion. Symptoms include misfires on one or more cylinders, hard starting and rough idle. A cracked or tracked cap is a common ignition fault on Series and older Defender petrol engines.
Should the distributor cap be replaced alongside other ignition parts?
The cap is usually renewed together with the rotor arm as a pair. If the engine is misfiring, inspect the HT leads and spark plugs at the same time. Replacing all ignition components together ensures the full high-tension circuit is in serviceable condition.
